Objectives : a) To learn writing pattern using for and against, for example, however, on
the one hand, also, furthermore, despite, moreover, such as, although, too
and to sum up.
b) To be able to ask for information and deal with misunderstanding.
Prior Knowledge : Students have to know vocabulary related to different types of schools and how to
disagree and contradict politely (lesson 27 of Module 7).
Warm Up : 1. Would you like to study English abroad? Why or why not?
2. Can you think of any other ways of helping people understand you?
*If other people don't understand, try to explain by using other words (e.g. What I mean is
that....)
* If you didn't hear, ask the person to repeat it, (e.g. I'm sorry, could you say that again?).
* If you don't understand something you think is important, ask the other person to explain
(e.g. I'm sorry, but what exactly do you mean?) (10 minutes)

Listening : Listen to the phone call and complete the information in the brochure. (module7/28Ex2)
Read the extracts (1-10) from the phone call in the Function File and choose the
correct alternative. Then listen and check your answers. (page 88, Ex.1) (15 minutes)
Work in Pairs/ Role Play : Students A reads the information about a language school in Ireland on page 129. Students B
reads about one in the States on page 131. Tell your partner one good thing and one bad thing
about his/her school. Would you consider going on a summer course there? Why or why not?
(25 minutes)
Homework : 1. Do exercises from page 65 to 69 of Language Powerbook. Turn in your homework on
coming Monday, 19/09/11.
2. Write an essay of about 350 to 500 words on one of the topics below. (Due Date: 20/09/11)
1. Schools don’t prepare young people for life in the real world. Do you agree?
2. There should be more discipline in schools. Do you agree?
3. Students should be allowed to choose the subjects they want to study. Do you agree?
