Objectives : -To be able to answer questions on an autobiographical extract.
-To practice using strategies for dealing with difficult words such as irrational,
enigmatic, insolent, vital, deficient, obligatory, barbarous, greasy and
finicky .
Warm Up : 1. Look at different varieties of foods, places and sport, and tell which of the
food items and places do you associated with each country?
2. Would you like to go to any of these places? Why or why not? (15 minutes)
Food : barbecues, fish and chips, hamburgers, hot dogs, kangaroo steaks, roast
beef.
Places: Big Ben, the Empire State Building, Sydney Opera House, the Great
Barrier Reef, the Grand Canyon, Buckingham Palace, Uluru (ayers
Rock), Stonehenge, the Statue of Liberty.
Sport : American football, baseball, basketball, cricket, football (soccer), golf,
rugby, surfing.
Reading & Discussion : Read the strategies of dealing with difficult words below first, and then discuss
the questions with a partner. Work in pairs. (25 minutes)
Strategies : Dealing with difficult words
1.Circle difficult words or expressions which you think are important.
2.Use the form (e.g. Adjective/noun) and the context to guess the meaning.
3.If you are not sure, check your guess in the Mini-dictionary. Translate the
word / expression into your own language. There may not be exact
equivalent.
4.Remember, creative writers sometimes make up words (e.g. Monkyish,
groupy).
5.Check your translations with a partner and then with your teacher.
After reading the strategies above, any three students have to read text A, B and
C (pg.106) aloud respectively while other students are also reading the text quietly.
And discuss these questions.
1(a). Are there any words or phrases in English that sound strange to you? Give
examples.
(b) Are there any words in English which you like because of their sound?
Tell the class.
(c)What words in your language have very strong associations for you?
(d)What English words would you find difficult to translate exactly into your
language? And vice versa?
2. Read text A. How would Ewa Hoffman answer the questions in number 1?
3. Read text B and C. What else does Ewa find difficult to get used to in Canada?
Translations : Work in pairs. Translate the word and expressions below into your language.
(Tamil, Chinese, Malay, etc.)
Compare your translations with the rest of the class.Which words were difficult to
translate? (25 minutes)

Have you ever met a person from a very different culture? Have you ever been
abroad? Did you experience 'culture shock' like Ewa? What was difficult or
strange for you?
Connotation : Divide the class into three groups. One person from the first group must write
down a word and start a chain of associations.
