Topic : Getting A Job : Advice for Interview & Listening Strategies.

Objectives : (a)To learn multi-part verbs - dress up, get accross, calm down, write
down, look (things) up, turn up, settle down, look around, take down,
make up, make out, go on about, speak up, come up with.
(b)To improve listening skill.
Warm Up : Look at the photo A to D and personality adjectives. Use the Mini-dictionary
to help you and think about what jobs the people in the pictures are doing?
What sort of a person would be suitable for these jobs? Students should come
up with sentences like, for example;"I think a film director needs to be
creative and confident." (15 minutes)
Method (Listening) : How do you take notes when listening to English? Read the Strategies and tell
the class. (10 minutes)
1. Listen once to get the general idea. Write down the main topics mentioned
(e.g. declining industries).
2. Make a table or information network with the main headings.
3. Listen again and write down important information related to the main
topics.
4. Only write down key words and use abbreviations (e.g. IT - information
technology, prof. serv. - professional services).
Listen to a radio program about job trends and categorize these topics
in the order they are discussed.

4. Changes in working life 5. Skills needed.
Listen again using the strategies in exercise above. Write information or
examples about each topic in reported speech.
e.g. They said that the declining industries were ............(15 minutes)
12 Multi-Part verbs : Work in groups. Divide the class into 3 big groups. When the teacher calls
for interviews out a phrase student who knows the answer (i.e. the correct multi-part verb)
must raise his or her hand up. If the answer is correct the group in which he
or she is will get one point. the group that could make most correct guesses
is the winner. (20 minutes)

Pronunciation/Intonation : Decide whether the question is polite or impolite. (10 minutes)

5. Would you mind repeating that, please?
Listen and repeat polite questions from above.

In-Class Activity : Work in pairs. One of you is the interviewer and the other is the candidate
for these jobs: ( 25 minutes)
1. Working in a snack bar 2. Working as a tour guide
Tips for preparing the interviews.
Interviewer : Decide on the pay, hours worked and what kind of person
you want to employ. Think of questions to ask about :
education, languages, work experience, relevant personal
qualities, hobbies / interests.
Candidate : Think of information about yourself or invent information about
: education- your school, your best subjects, languages you
speak, work experience, personal qualities, hobbies and
interests. Think of a question to ask the interviewer, e.g.
about pay and hours.
Homework : Do exercises in page 78, 79, 80, 81, 82, 83 & 84 of Language
Power Book. Hand in your home next Monday.
