Objectives : -To learn reported statements and what kind of changes in reported speech are to
be made.
Warm Up : Get a News Headline or a news article randomly from the teacher. If you choose a
news headline think about the news that might be written under the headline. If you
choose a news article read it and give the headline in 5 minutes. And deduce your
final decision . (15-20 minutes)

How Verb Tenses Change to Reported Speech

Note: There is no change to; could, would, should, might and ought to.
Instead of said, told
and asked : There are many other verbs we can use apart from said, told and asked. Using them
properly can make what you say much more interesting and informative. These
include:-accused, admitted, advised, alleged, agreed, apologised, begged, boasted,
complained, denied, explained, implied, invited, offered, ordered, promised, replied,
suggested and thought.
Group Activity : After dividing the class into 3 groups, students have to compete with one another
in group to get more points by being able to write as many correct changes as they
can on the board from Direct Speech to Indirect Speech. The group with the most
points wins. ( 15 to 20 minutes)
Oral Practice : Work in pairs. Look at picture A, B and C in page 96. Answer the questions in 5
minutes.
1. Who are the people and what are they doing?
2. Why are the jobs dangerous?
3. Would you like to do any of these jobs? Why? Why not?
From the jobs listed in page 96, what do you think are the five most dangerous jobs ?
Put them in order. Refer page 131 and check Relative Risk Rates. (10 minutes)
(architect, cashier, construction worker, electrician, farm worker, fire fighter,
fisherman, forestry, journalist, lorry driver, miner, pilot, police officer, politician,
soldier, taxi driver, window cleaner).
Listening Practice : Listen and complete the interview. Go to page 96 , exercise 3. (10 minutes)
Factual Differences : Read the journalist's report of the interview and find 5 factual differences. (10 minutes)
Changing Sentences : Read the report of an interview and write the woman's original words. What job does
she do? (10 minutes)
For Example: She said she had to be very slim and fit for her job
Original words: I have to be very slim and fit for my job.
Do Exercise 10, pg. 97 (1-10). Remember to change tenses, pronouns and time
expressions.
Homework(reminder) : Work out exercises in page 74, 75, 76,77 & 108 of Language Powerbook. Hand in your
homework on 26/09/11, Monday.
