Objectives : a) -To practice talking about illustrations.
b) -To learn strategies for matching headings and paragraphs.
c) -To identify idiomatic expressions and to practice using collocations - offer (him) a job,
close (it) properly, turn down (the) offer, make (his) living, do well, get stuck, get the sack, try hard,
find (it) impossible, become self-employed, provide inspiration, grow dramatically.
Warm Up : Work in pairs and look at the key words. How many jobs related to the career areas can
you think of in two minutes? Example: Art - artist, painter, sculptor
Careers: Business - Law -
Construction - Literature -
Design - The Media -
Engineering- Medicine -
Farming - Science -
Fashion- Sport -
Information - Travel and Tourism -
Technology - (10 minutes)
Reading : Divide the class into 8 groups, and a student from each group reads a passage in page 94 entitle Odd
Jobs. Reading should be made as clear as possible with good pronunciation and intonation
accurately. After reading of the text, answer these questions. Write your answers in Grammar
Notebook using full sentences. Submit your answer in 10 minutes.
1. Why are 'passenger Pushers' necessary on the metro in Japan?
2. Why does the writer describe chewing gum as a 'menace'?
3. Why did Harrods employ special shop assistants on the escalator?
4. Why were sewage works a problem in Berkshire?
5. Why was Miss King successful? (15 minutes)
Collocations : VERB + NOUN VERB + ADVERB VERB + ADJECTIVE

provide inspiration
get stuck
Add two or three suitable words between VERB and NOUN, VERB and ADVERBS, VERB and
ADJECTIVE. Copy collocations above in your grammar notebook. And complete the sentences
with collocations above in their correct form.

can't stand the smell of hamburgers.
3. I ________________ to understand the instructions of my new digital camera and had to ask a

Idiomatic Expressions : *look at the words in the idiomatic expression. Remember that the words do not mean exactly what
they say.
*try to imagine the image created by the expression (e.g. smooth as honey). (15 minutes)
Match the following idiomatic expressions with the meanings.

Write a paragraph with your partner using all the idioms above as a short story in 10 minutes.

Oral Practice : Questioners - Do you work outdoors? Do you wear a uniform? Do you have to travel? Etc.. (20 minutes)
Answerer - Imagine you have an odd job (strange job) but don't tell any one in the class. They have to
question you and find out what job you have right now in your imagination. When the
questioners ask you questions, the only answer you can give them is either YES or NO.
Don't explain. Let them ask you as many as 20 questions till they get the correct answer
from you. The last questioner who asks the right question will replace the answerer.
Answerer - When the last questioner asks the right question, the answerer must say something like
this. e.g. "I have done baby-sitting a few times. I got paid $2000 a month."
Next Class Warm Up: Get a News Headline or a news article randomly from the teacher. If you choose a news headline
think about the news that might be written under the headline. If you choose a news article read it
and give the headline in 5 minutes. And deduce your final decision . (15-20 minutes)

exam. This week homework is as follow:
