Teacher Training Materials of Professor Dr David Ngin Sian Pau
Grammar based teaching method

Grammar concentration point: SINCE and FOR
Students:        Lower Intermediate Level or above.
Activity :          Job interview
Objectives:      Let the students know how to use SINCE and FOR in present perfect and Continuous tenses. After
teaching this lesson, students should be able to speak English using since and for suitably.

Materials:       Print the word SINCE on a paper and FOR on another paper in full scale.

How to do:
· Teacher should stick the two sheets on the left and right top corner of the black board in front of the class.
· Now write 1999 or last month or January and 5 years or 3 months or 10 days.
· Let the students point SINCE , when the teacher says, “1999” and FOR when the teacher says, “5 years”.  They
should be familiar with the usage and should be able to do it as fast as possible.
· After the students can understand which word is appropriate to use, write these sentences on the board to let them
know how the word SINCE and FOR can be used.  E.g. How long have you had your previous job? How long have
you been looking for a new job?   What are your skills? What are your interests? Make sure the students understand
what you want them to know.
· Let the students work in pair(2 by 2), one as a boss who will ask demanding questions to the candidate and another
one as candidate who will answer all the questions asked by the boss.
· Other questions which can not be answered with SINCE and FOR, leave up to the students’ imagination.
· Let the students prepare for job interview to practice it in conversation. Give them five to ten minutes for preparation.
· This activity will go on till the students have spoken the language.

Teacher: Note down some sentences or words which are lack of accuracy and correct
Pronunciation and intonation and give correction in the end of the class.
