Teacher Training Materials of Professor Dr David Ngin Sian Pau
Day 11
Time:40 - 50 minutes

This is one of the topic base teaching methods which is quite popular in Oral English teaching class. Why I say it is popular is that this topic can be used for all level of English speakers whether elementary students or university students.

Objectives:

By doing this activity, students will remember the following related words, know how to describe a person, how to ask questions as a policeman.

Vocabularies          : felony, fine, custody, burglar, cell, cop, crime scene, criminal,
Describe a person  : beard, mustache, shirt color, hair style,

Teacher:

1. Play a short video clip of any crime scene.  If you do not have access to a TV/Video, cut out
some pictures from a magazine.  Be sure to cut out enough for half the class that everyone has a
picture and spare another few extras.

2. Put students into pairs, policeman and a witness and let all the police out that the witnesses are
    in the classroom.

3. Now give the criminal’s picture to all the witnesses in the classroom. Let them see the picture so
as to be able to identify or describe the criminal to the police. Give them one or two minutes to
look at it and take back all the pictures and keep one picture a long with the other pictures you
    have already chosen.

4. Let the police come in and find out their partner witnesses and ask how the criminal looks like.

5. After getting enough information about the criminal, let the police reports how the criminal is
and then choose the criminal’s pictures from the pictures you have.

6. You should make sure that the witnesses remain silent until all the policemen have arrested the
    picture of their choice.

Police: Who is the criminal?
Is the criminal  male or female?
             How does he look like?
What color of shirt does he wear?
Long sleeves or short sleeves shirt?
             How is his hair style?
             Does he/she wear glasses?
             How tall is he/she?
             When did you see him?

Finally, show pictures of different hairstyles?

Note: You can make the activity more difficult by selecting pictures of people who look more similar(same age/sex
etc.) or easier by having a greater range of people.
